The 70s and 80s of Australia have always been fond nostalgic memories. Water sprinklers, running around, and beach balls. Today though, children are always on their phones; they are missing out, aren’t they? Older generations remember the stealth of stealing water from the irrigation system to have fun. At the same time, children nowadays talk about TikTok dances.

While such systems were necessary for fun, those are often considered as first-world wishes and problems. Where is this system of water distribution NEEDED?

Farms, Gardens and Australians:

Well, the answer to that is in Australia’s most delicate farming areas. Healthy crops, vegetables, fruits, and more need not only a good water supply but a consistent water supply. Why is freshwater important for plants? What does freshwater provide that saltwater cannot? Freshwater, as the name suggests, is the freshest out of the source, meaning it comes from a moving stream such as a river. It is also fresh in the sense of cleanliness. So, with a new water supply that is also fresh, one doesn’t need to consider other options at all. One might think, ‘ I don’t have a farm; what is in it for me?’ Good news! Australians and gardening go hand in hand. Many respondents said that they loved watering their green patches, flowers, fruits, and vegetables. They spend many evenings of their week watering their plants and find it very therapeutic. How is gardening therapeutic? Well, firstly it is a lot of free time for oneself and their thoughts. Many people love to plan their day or week, or even months out while gardening. It can also be a safe and private space for self-expression. While these are happy, light-hearted memories of gardening, with the last drought, all of these activities were affected, and many things had to be reconsidered, reconfigured, and re-evaluated.

How To Save Water At Home?

With the biggest change being using recycled water, there are a couple of small but effective tips that one can follow at home to change the general scenario of Australia, slowly but surely.

  1. The easiest way to reduce water wastage is by ensuring there are no LEAKS. Water leakage can be so discreet one can never randomly figure it out. So, it is essential to take one’s time every fortnight or in similar frequencies to take an evening to check every pipe, faucet, hose and any other source of water. There are two ways to be mindful if one discovers a leak. Calling the plumber is the first and right solution since some things only professionals can do. However, if the professionals are unavailable immediately, it is imminent to solve the leakage temporarily, at least instead of allowing the wastage to continue. The best and simplest solution is to place a container or bucket under the leakage area to COLLECT that water and use it later for gardening itself, for instance.
  2. The second area of water wastage is in car washing. Cars have become a need globally, and for a bustling place like Australia, cars are almost expected to be the default needs. As a result of a lot of cars and pollution, people wash their cars quite frequently. A lot of water is wasted, but what if the wastewater is put on the lawn? That is a good solution. To do that, one must simply park their cars next to plantation spots, and if not that, they can always collect the water in a container and then transport it to the garden!

By following these small but effective steps, irrigation systems and household water systems can become more eco-friendly and not wasteful.
