There is no way around it; when you say to the average person that you spent your day using plasma cutting machines, the majority of people would think that’s a very cool job to have!
And a plasma cutter is a cool piece of machinery to have around, but, like most objects with the word plasma in them, they need to be handled with care. And if you are operating a factory that is using, or is about to begin using, a plasma cutting machine, you need to ensure that your staff are safe, as well as being able to enhance productivity.
So, with that in mind, what are some of the basic safety points to consider when operating a plasma cutting machine?
Table of Contents
Avoid Electrocution
The first point to consider is the risk of electrocution. Plasma cutters, especially the ones that have built-in inverter technology, can increase the power output to an extremely high level. If a member of your team were to come into contact with the current, they would have a fatal shock. Not a great outcome for anyone!
Aim to ensure that your plasma cutting machines are grounded and wired correctly at the start of every shift. Always make sure you are wearing rubber gloves on your welding gloves, and make sure you are standing on a rubber mat and ensure that there is no moisture in the air. It may even be worth investing in plasma cutting machines by Kerf Developments for that additional bit of safety.
Wear Eye Protection
Eye protection is next on the list, and plasma cutting machines produce severe infrared and ultraviolet rays, which are very hazardous to the eyes and the skin. Make sure that the eye protection that you or your staffs wear will ensure that neither of these rays can damage their eyes or their skin. This will usually involve the use of a face shield and safety glasses with the correct safety lenses.
Wear Protective Clothing
This goes hand in hand with protective clothing, as it’s highly likely you’ll be exposing yourself or your staff to molten metal and fumes, so they’re going to need a little bit of protective gear! This will include a protective shield hat that covers the head fully, safety shoes, welding gloves, protective eye gear, and non-inflammable welding aprons and clothing.
Keep An Eye Out For Wires
This was mentioned briefly earlier, but faulty wiring in any electrical device is going to be hazardous, especially when it comes to plasma cutters. Always aim to check for the functionality of any ground cables, and if there are complications, call in a professional to fix them. Never attempt to fix wiring relating to plasma cutters by yourself, and always seek an expert opinion for the safety of yourself and your team, unless you or someone on your staff has the appropriate training.
Lessen Toxic Gases
Using plasma cutting machines produces fumes and gasses, so your welders and team should be working in a well-ventilated environment. If this is not possible, then they will need to have the appropriate breathing apparatus in order to operate the plasma cutting machines.
